I'm convinced Benicio Del Toro belong in type 'eight'

Gorgeous list! Thanks for posting this, and not for not limiting the Fours roster to people who offed themselves or died in a pool of their own vomit.

Thanks for this fantastic list of contmeporary enneagram types! I am wondering what you think of this question. I am surprised you put David Bowie as a 3. All others I thought were perfect.
I thought David Bowie might be a 5 or 4.

I am, (I think) 8w7 ENTP

Robby, I listed David Bowie as a 3 because of his obvious self-certain and image-oriented style. He's also a bit arrogant, self-important and knows how to set up people's responses and make the desired impact on them.

He's definitely got a big 4 influence nonetheless. Probably a 3w4, possibly a 4w3. Might also be similar to a 7w8 but he's too calculated and snobbish.

hey i just read the list and it was great!

Hi. I'm wondering why you think John Cusack is a 6.
INTP said…
I've typed John Cusack as a Six mainly based on his interviews, and also his style and personal vibe.

He's rather unconventional and openly dislikes fame and popularity. He doesn't really get a kick out of being a celebrity. Seems to have a wide range of emotional expressions (from sad to funny, sweet to cranky, deeply analytical to action-oriented). It's hard to put him in a box - he's not the melancholic, passionate type that's typical to a 4 for example.

Also he doesn't take himself too seriously and can be funny in a rather self-deprecating way. He also portrays fear in a very believable way.

Other thing that strikes me as 6ish is his interest in political issues and his activism against the war in Iraq. He seems to have a solid grip of the inner workings of economics and how money and profit are used to manipulate masses. He's witty and thoughtful, which would suggest a head type.

I think he's probably got a strong connection to 9, because of his pleasant, friendly nature, but he's definitely more intellectually alert and cerebral rather than easy-going and unfocused.

Based on these aspects, I'd say he's a probably 6, possibly soc/sp with a noticeable connection to 9.

The second choice would be 9.

What type do you think Nathalie Portman is? she has a four vibe.

i agree with them all, but i'm quite skeptical of Elton John being a seven.

I would think both V.I. Lenin and perhaps Moshe Dayan would be Ones as well. BTW, I am a One and an INTJ.

Awesome list...thank you.
I'd be glad if you add
'Hermann Hesse'. Imo he is a very typical 4.

Interesting! I am very surprised to see Sandra Bullock listed with the peace-loving and easy-going type '9'. She is described by herself and others as a strong-willed leader type... I would guess that she is a type '8'. Patty

Paul McCartney is the quintessential three -- it's so accurate, it's almost scary.

Regarding your placement of Jesus as a Two, I saw a book once arguing that Jesus isn't any of the types but rather manifests the divine attributes of all of them.

I think Natalie Portman is a 5w4... but mainly a 5.

"I'd rather be smart than a movie star." Kinda says it all.

Btw, great blog.

Hello, I'm terribly interested in what type Bowie is, and I think it's 5w4.

He wrote his songs by cutting up stories and throwing the words into the air to see where they land. That is very unconventional, as was his look for many years. He is way to cerebral to be a 4. And way to reclusive to be a 3.

He's a 5! [:)]

Nice blog!

Regarding Sandra Bullock - having E9, yet seeming E8ish; it's worth remembering that E9 is the most passive of the 9 types and without using the energy of one of the adjacent types (a so-called 'Wing', see Don Riso's Ennea books/site) E9 types would be practically inert and unable to get out of bed! Howabout Sandra B having E9w8 and her MBTI ESFP?

I've been studying Enneatypes for ages (I have E5w4 INFP) but what originally hooked me was the fact that adjacent types are like chalk & cheese yet about 90% of us use one of those two as a back-up to our primary enneatype (which adds in various ways to our life 'dilemmas').

I don't believe that Marlon Brando was a type 8. He seemed like a type 4 with a strong 3 wing. Same goes to Robert DeNiro. He is overtly 4ish with a strong 3ish tendency. What do you think?
Anonymous said…
Another incorrect one is marking Donald Trump as an eight. He was from a prestigious family that focused on achievements for love, that childhood wound rendered him a three. Which caused him to be really successful in business compared to his older brother which also went into the field of business.

While I appreciate the compilation of this list I don't agree with alot of the three types. Mick Jagger is a 4 or 7 and I would add Brooke Shields, Tyra banks, Derek Jeter, chef morimoto and owner mark Cuban to the list of threes. In any case I love psychology and the enneagram amd I am thankful to find this blog.

Anderson Cooper is also a three/2 wing
Anonymous said…
Agreed
Anonymous said…
David Beckham is with no doubt a 3!
Anonymous said…
Woah, is NO ONE gonna mention Stephen Colbert? That dude's DEFINITELY a type 7.
Anonymous said…
Wilde was almost certainly a 7.

Nice work! Some more Ones to consider:
George Harrison, Subcomandante Marcos, Bill Maher, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Osama bin Laden, Kofi Annan, Amy Goodman, Bill Moyers, Jamie Hyneman, Eugene Debs, Tina Fey, Ralph Nader, Keith Olbermann, Martin Sheen William F. Buckley, Woodrow Wilson.

And if you'd like some fictional examples:
Batman, Rorschach(Watchmen), William Wallace (Braveheart), Delenn (Babylon 5), Mr. Spock, and Jack Shepard (Lost).

I know it may sound odd, but I'd honestly type Dexter Morgan as a sx/sp 1w9. The entire fabric of his being is based upon his code, his morals. He always tries to remain consistent with his superego. He tries to rationalize everything and stay objective and logical, hence the 9 wing.

Also, I'd say Thom Yorke, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, and David Byrne are definite 5w4's.
Lxmh Bdccxw said…
David Bowie I would call a sx/so 4w3. He's more about the authenticity and creativity deep down and more charismatic and image obsessed on the surface.
Lxmh Bdccxw said…
I'd also call Marlon Brando a 4w5, he's much too thoughtful, soft and deep to be an 8w9. 4w5's can be tough guys and be prone to outbursts as well, it's part of being an individualist without caring about appearances so much like it's counterpart.

I believe Sandra Bullock is a 9W8
Anonymous said…
I totally agree
Anonymous said…
I actually think she's an 8w9

Great list! I agree with some of the typings, do not with others, but anyway you have done a nice recopilation.

If you are interested in typing celebrities, famous people and Tv Characters, we created a group on Facebook called "Portraits Of The Enneagram", where we discuss this issue from many perspectives and schools.

Congrats again.

Mick Jagger is indisputably a SEVEN. This is a good list, much of it coming from the work of Tom Condon. Tom Condon is peerless at typing but even he gets it wrong sometimes. Tom's list needed to be updated by himself.

Hello!

I'm not sure if you are checking your comments for this post anymore, but I am curious about a couple characters commonly listed as 4's: Bob Dylan & Jim Morrison.

I wonder if Bob Dylan was actually a 3w4 because of his VERY strategic marketing, and the way he copied woodie guthrie's 'man of the people' style... and because most of his songs were not very self-revealing (I mean, they revealed his political views, but not his personal life!).

And Jim Morrison: I wonder if he was an i~fp 9w8. There is this 'letting it all hang out' and oblivion-seeking quality to his melancholy that feels 9w8-ish to me. I know many infp 9's that were initially mistyped as 4's.

What do you think?

I would agree. Trump never takes up for the little guy - 8. An 8 would never screw someone over on good work.8s are not mean unless in defending someone. 8s don't brag about themselves at all. They will say they are awesome but could care less about announcing achievements. 8s talk style is direct and to the point but do not talk in circles with no point made. He does have the anger but that could be a 4 wing and or low in his number 3. 3s brag, take credit for other people work, unethical and can be bullies. Of course that is all low in your number.

Some of this is good! Unfortunately a lot of mistypefication.
Steve Jobs=4. Courtney Cox=3 Jennifer Anniston=6. Whoopi Goldberg=9
Etc.

Paul Gauguin is 9
I am surprised you put Carl Gustav Jung as a Nine. Nine's
avoid conflicts, and one of the most famous incidents in
Jung's life was his fall-out with Freud. I would have
thought Jung was a Five. The Penguin History of Psychology says that Jung was a man of enormous erudition, and Anthony Storr said in his book on Jung "Kind and compassionate though Jung was, he was always more interested in ideas than people". These comments make Jung sound like a Five to me. Anthony Edwards, Northampton, United Kingdom.
Why do you think Margaret Thatcher is a One? I would have thought she was an Eight.. I did an Enneagram class when I was at the University of Lancaster, and the people in it thought she was an Eight. Anthony C. Edwards.

Not gonna correct them all but at least one: Al Gore is a 2 for sure xD

I think that René Descartes is a Six. His whole "thing" was doubting. He based his existence on the fact that he was doubting it. Isn't one of the 6's main attributes doubt? I've always thought of him as a 6.

Anthony C. Edwards: "He sounds like a five" (C.G. Jung) This is not how you identify personalities. The Enneagram in particular is about the deeper layers. Jung wanted to unite everything, pursued himself connected to the source of all being. Just because someone is intellectual doesn't mean they're fives
. Not Nietzsche, not Kant, not Einstein. The last three were, for example, an eight, a one and I don't know about Einstein. Ok, maybe he was a 5. Nietzsche and Kant were an eight and one. Even typical .. Read Helen Palmer, ...

I don't think that Lincoln is a 9. A nine would not have launched the Civil War....a 9 would have negotiated us into 50 countries. Thinking he is a 9 is mostly based on his Inaugeration address when the Civil War is over. He seems more like a 6, who believes in the authority of the Constitution and is willing to fight to prove it stands.

Interested in how people see Lincoln as the passive, peace adoring 9. I am a 9 and so get the reality of the life and behavior of a 9.
