Enneagram and Myers Briggs on TV Shows

One of the easiest way to apply one's Enneagram and Myers Briggs theoretical knowledge is to study and type the characters on TV shows. Unlike movies which are usually too short to allow for thorough development of its characters' personalities, TV series manage to provide us with consistent examples of many different types which can be observed at length and in a larger number of situations.

A plus for fictional typology is that usually the people who conceive and write out these characters tend to 'lend' their personality types to their creations (to a lesser or greater extent anyway). This is a good thing for typing, because it gives authenticity and coherence to the fictional personalities and thus makes them easier to accurately analyze and pinpoint. Also another great plus can be the fact that more often than not, the actors also share the same personality type (or at least a wing) with the characters they're playing (what are auditions for?), so when this happens the type really stands out beautifully and the role is noticeably well-played.

I suppose at times this 'personality lending' thing does tend to make some shows a bit redundant, because once in a while you'll see many of the characters in one show exhibiting rather similar traits and behaviors (the writing is often done by one person). But nonetheless, exploring various aspects and particularities of one typology is again a good thing for the Enneagram or Myers Briggs aficionados, especially when and if they're having some trouble typing themselves or distinguishing between two similar types.

And although it's true some shows tend to slightly modify their characters' traits in order to better suit the audience's expectations and desires, most of these fictional types maintain a good sense of their original identities.

Here is a list of some TV shows I'm watching and their characters' personality types (only those which I managed to type fairly confidently - the others I'll add after I get a clearer idea). I'm also open to additions so go ahead and use the comment box (or my email) if you have any suggestions.

Have you ever seen "Doctor Who"--and if you have--would you consider doing personality types on them? I love that show, and the personalities always fascinate (but baffle) me. :D

Silly INTPs. Me too. Here's my Dewar's Profile.

Oh I found the MMPI-3 in another blog here. I was thinking, wouldn't be great fun to use graph theory and statistics to analyze blogger profiles? Oh that's already being done.

Doctor Who types:

The Doctor 7w6

I think a lot of the newer companions on Doctor Who are going to be 7s, or 8s and 6s with 7 wings.

The Doctor has changed with different incarnations. I might go as far as putting Sylverster McCoy's Doctor down as 8w7... as study and thought seems to be a stress place for him, and he's pretty confrontational and aggressive. With Ace as a counterphobic 6w7. A lot of the companions seem to be 6s (especially counterphobic ones). Amy Pond also seems to be a counterphobic 6w7 (with Rory as her doting 2, who waits through the centuries for her). Though her Doctor,( played by Matt Smith) is a very typical 5, (there is a great moment in the episode "The Doctor's Wife", where he says "I really DON'T know what to do... ...Ooooh! That's a new feeling!", which for me typifies a 5 really well). Certainly in this case, decisive action seems to be a direction of growth for him too. This is a change, as David Tennant's Doctor was much more a 4w5. I'm not 100% sure about Christopher Ecclestone's Doctor. I'm leaning towards counterphobic 6w5. I can't seem to make up my mind about Rose Tyler. Martha Jones, probably a 6. Donna, probably a 7. Possibly even a 9. I'm pretty sold that Sarah-Jane Smith was a 2w3. The tendancy for there to be a lot of 6s amongst the Doctor's companions makes total sense, with the tendancy to seek out a leader/authority figure, and then to constantly question their decisions. Also, they love the geeking out, and the close proximity to 7, lends an air of adventure!

Monica Geller is an ESFJ, remember in that episode where she struggles to fire her employees because it feels bad for her. More like a feeler to me.

Interesting read and I agree with the vast majority.

Disagree on Haley and Alex Dunphy (Modern Family).

You have Alex down as a 4w3 - I think she's a typical 5(possibly w4) and I would say she's INTx.

You have Haley down as 5w4, which can't be right. She's either a 3 or, more likely, a 4. She's also, in my opinion, ESFP.

It appears you may have them the wrong way round.

Nonetheless, an interesting read!

Monica Geller-Bing is definitely NOT a T! She's ESFJ, for sure!

Ross Geller is an INTJ.
Monica Geller is a little bit too F-ish for an ESTJ.
and does anyone else think that Phoebe might be a 9 instead of 4? Type 9 may attracted to magical thing as much as type 4.

Ok this is very old discussion, but in trying to explore the idea od Enneagrams more, I came across this discussion. I would say that Phoebe is a type 9. I'm unsure of her wing, and would have to watch Friends again in order to figure it out. I'm also a type 9, and I think it's more in the way she talks about the very "tragic" events in her life. She isn't very bothered by them. Like it just happened, and you move on. Oh yeah, that sucked, but it's over now. Just wanted to throw my opinion out there on this older post ;)

Dr. House is EASILY an INTJ / 1w9

Yes, I don't see phoebe as a 4. A 9 makes much more sense.

I think she has an 8 wing. I see bursts of 8 energy. She is a lot melts blunt and assertive than she is given credit for.
